Viking has several longboats that travel up and down the Rhine River, including the Viking Einar and Viking Sigrun. I embarked on the Rhine Getaway seven-day river cruise, which started in Amsterdam and ended in Basel. The boat stopped at cities along the route, including Rotterdam, Cologne, Strasbourg, Kehl, Rudesheim, Koblenz, Speyer, and Colmar, with excursions to the nearby areas of Kinderdijk and the Black Forest. Wondering what your experience will be like on the Oceania Nautica? This video will show you the embarkation process and the ship layout. It will also review the ship experience. Oceania Nautica was built in 1999 and set sail in 2000. The ship can carry 670 passengers. It has 11 decks of which the passengers use decks 3-11. There are two specialty restaurants, Toscana and Polo Grill, the no-reservation Grand Dining Room, the poolside Wave Grill and the Terrace Cafe buffet. The ship cruises to many destinations and itineraries. The cruise I took was billed as Scots, Celts and Vikings and included stops in Scotland, Faro Islands, Orkney Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Canada, Boston and Bermuda. However, once on board, I realized some passengers had booked my trip as two separate cruises: A Viking's Crossing and Bermuda Palette. Senior Travelers: As with any cruise, there were activities geared for all activity levels. There were some complaints from passengers about communications on excursions, especially when one miscommunication required passengers to stand in the pouring rain for over 30 min. However, this was an exception rather than the rule. There were excursions geared to various levels of physical activity. Solo Travelers: They had a solo traveler gathering on the first day, which allowed us to make connections immediately. During the cruise, they had two dinners hosted in the Grand Dining Room for solo travelers. I also received special dining invitations for solo travelers that participated regularly in the solo travelers social hour. For Senior Travelers: Regent has all sorts of accommodations for seniors with limited mobility. There were always numerous options for excursions, so you could pick one that was appropriate for you. They also handled all luggage.

For Senior Travelers: Regents offers excursions at varying activity levels that are all included in the fare. You could pick what was appropriate for your needs.

For Seniors: Viking always makes their cruises accessible to everyone. There are options for those more or less mobile. There were ramps to get on and off the boat, but I saw people that used walkers navigate them. For Solo Travelers: The dining seating allowed for connections and conversations with other passengers--you felt like you got to know everyone by the end of the cruise. Viking handles luggage, transportation, and any special requests with ease.

They take care of all the nuisances of travel. The atmosphere, without children, is calm and elegant. For solo travelers, there is a solo travelers meet-up at the beginning of the cruise, which enables you to connect with other solo travelers. It can be more expensive to travel solo because of the single supplement. However, if you shop around, you may find discounts on the single supplement for specific cruises--particularly ones that are at the beginning or end of the season and are harder to sell. I paid a 50% rate for the single supplement on my cruise.
