SOLO TRAVEL

Welcome!  I'm Laurie, a senior solo traveler, and I'm slowly chipping away at a lengthy travel bucket list.  So far, I've been to 56 countries and have extensive travel plans for the next several years.  I truly enjoy sharing my journeys and experiences, connecting with other travelers, and sharing travel tips I learned along the way.

ABOUT

Senior Solo Travel in Busan, South Korea
Senior Solo Kayak on Lake Louise, Banff, Canada

I come from a family that traveled frequently.  We spent every summer on budget-minded camping trips, and when we came of age, we dispersed around the country.  At 17, my parents joined the Peace Corps and moved to Afghanistan.  I was able to join them there for a visit with my siblings and we traveled to Iran, Turkey and Greece.  This was a life-changing trip for me.  To be transported from the U.S. onto the streets of Kabul opened my eyes to a whole new world, where cultures and traditions were so radically different than the way I grew up.

Later I embarked on a career in the performing arts, where I was able to tour all over the United States and internationally.  It developed in me a love for learning about new places, people and culture.

When I retired, my plan was to use my early retirement years to really explore the world while I could still move well.  However, the pandemic suddenly put a stop to it.  Once we could get out there again, I was even more antsy to get moving...and I didn't want to wait on my friends to make travel plans.  So, I just started traveling solo and discovered there was an amazing freedom in going on your own.  I didn't have to coordinate schedules.  I didn't have to adjust my pace to theirs.  I could do exactly what I wanted to do without compromising. And most importantly, I met more people and engaged more actively when I was on my own.  Since beginning this journey, I have met so many people on the road who have enriched my travels.

Before I started my YouTube channel, I had already traveled to numerous countries and 48 of the United States.  I have very little video from these travels, but plenty of photographs.  So, I will still share some of these trips with you as blog posts.

I enjoy sharing my journeys and hearing from other travelers.  My goal is to present the highs, as well as the lows, in order to inform others who might be planning a similar adventure.  Happy travels everyone!

SENIOR SOLO TRAVEL: An introduction to the channel for senior and solo travelers!

For seniors, solo travel can either be daunting or liberating! If you select the right destinations and the right type of travel, anyone can do it and have a fabulous journey. When I started traveling solo, I discovered there was an amazing freedom in going on your own. I didn't have to coordinate schedules. I didn't have to adjust my pace to theirs. I could do exactly what I wanted to do without compromising. And most importantly, I met more people and engaged more actively when I was on my own. Perhaps you lost your partner and are now on your own. Perhaps your partner doesn't like to travel, but you do! Maybe your friends are too busy, too lazy, too poor, or too reluctant. There are many reasons to travel solo and it can be just as rewarding, if not more, than traveling with a friend or partner. Please subscribe and turn on notifications if you'd like to follow my solo travels and get periodic travel advice. Also, make sure to check the descriptions on all of my videos for senior and solo traveler information for the specific destinations. @seniorsolotravel Senior Solo Travel Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/443309331791413 Travel Advice Videos: Solo Travel: How to Banish the Fear!: https://youtu.be/wx1rnerHjVw How to Pack a Carry On: https://youtu.be/ph3NM4i6pVU Favorite Travel Products: https://youtu.be/jizhD6Xnczw Senior Travel Discounts: https://youtu.be/9U1pS-lB6CA Business Class-How to find flight deals: https://youtu.be/lx8wETsqeTk Travel Insurance-Are you paying too much?: https://youtu.be/52Yp_LFQELc Cruise vs. Land Travel: https://youtu.be/YDRxD3U3pU8 Pre-Travel Checklist: https://youtu.be/KnUkt7EojA4

PRE-TRAVEL CHECKLIST: 38 Things to do Before your Trip! With downloadable packing list!

Have you ever arrived at the airport and realized you forgot your passport or phone? I have and it's not pretty! I created a Pre- Travel Checklist, which should help you get organized before your trip. I've also included links to other travel tips and packing advice videos below. This Travel Checklist covers what to do several months before your trip, one month before your trip, one week before your trip, the day before you leave, and before you walk out the door! PRE-TRAVEL CHECKLIST Several Months Before trip 1. Plan your trip: Book flights, lodging, rental car, etc. 2. Check your travel documents; make sure passport is up-to-date. 3. Check travel restrictions for your destination. 4. Purchase travel insurance (see link above). 5. Book pet or baby sitter. 6. Book excursions, reservations, spa packages, etc. Month Before trip: 1. Create a packing list. 2. Review your itinerary. 3. Research destinations for top things to see. 4. Purchase gifts. 5. Add travel apps to your phone. 6. Check the baggage policy. Week before trip: 1. Create staging area. 2. Start using up perishable food in your fridge. 3. Pay Bills, Transfer money, and Get Cash. 4. Download entertainment. 5. Notify your Bank and/or Credit Card Company of travel. 6. Schedule Mail Hold. 7. Schedule an Uber or arrange transportation to the airport. 8. Share your itinerary with family or loved ones. 9. Notify neighbors, community patrol, or neighborhood watch groups of your travel dates. 10. Make Sure your prescriptions are filled, and you have any over-the-counter meds you might need. 11. Check your electronic equipment: Make sure you have batteries, cords, adapters, and accessories. Make sure everything is charged and, if you have AirTags, put them in your bags. 12. Check the weather of your destination and adjust your packing accordingly. 13. Organize your documents, visas, passport, driver’s license, insurance cards and travel insurance information. Also bring AAA, AARP or National Park Pass, if needed. 14. Start preparing for your trip by hydrating yourself and adjusting your sleep schedule to lessen jet lag. Day before trip: 1. Check in for your flight and download or print boarding passes. 2. Clean perishable items out of fridge. 3. Run Dishwasher. 4. Water Plants. 5. Final Packing. If you packed early, review your list again to make sure you didn't take something out and forget to put it back in. 6. Pack travel snacks Just before walking out the door: 1. Turn Thermostat up or down. 2. Turn down water heater, if possible. 3. Take Garbage out. 4. Run Garbage disposal. 5. Unplug appliances that aren't necessary. 6. And finally, DOUBLE CHECK that you have your travel docs, passport, eyeglasses, phone and toothbrush. Additional tasks suggested by viewers: Print copies of important documents, so you have backup. Put important documents in a cloud file, so that if you lose everything, you have your passport information and other items in an accessible place. Seoul, Korea: Senior Solo Travel ( 7 Things to see in Seoul)

Seoul, S Korea is a lively and entertaining city. I spent a week in Seoul, 3 days at the beginning of my trip, and 4 days at the end. This Part One video covers the first three days of my trip to Seoul, including visits to Cheonggyecheon, the Haengung Palace in Suwon, Namsan or Seoul Tower, Insadong Street, Bukchon Hanok Village, Gyeongbokgung Palace, the DMZ. @seniorsolotravel Facebook Travel Forum: https://www.facebook.com/groups/443309331791413 Solo Travelers: Seoul is a safe city and is easy to navigate. The bus and subway system are wonderful and the Naver Map App works beautifully. Senior Travelers: The city is fairly easy to get around, but traffic is heavy, so travel is faster by public transit. There is quite a bit of hiking and elevation changes required at all historical sites. Do some research if you have mobility limitations. See video below on things to know before visiting South Korea for more details on travel logistics. Senior Solo Travel Tokyo, Japan: 6 days in Tokyo (Things to see and do)

Traveling to Japan was a top priority on my bucket list. I spent a month in Japan and South Korea and am sharing my travel highlights, both successes and mistakes. This video covers six days of touring in Tokyo, including Shinjuku, Shibuya Scramble, Akihabara, Omoide Yokocho, Piss Alley, Hanazono Shrine, Golden Gai, Shinjuku National Garden, Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, Ghibli Museum, Edo Tokyo Open Air Architecture Museum, Hotel Gajeon Tokyo, Meiji Shrine, Tokyo Tower, Ueno Park, Meguro River, Sakurai Japanese Tea Service, Tennoji Temple, Kabukicho (Red Light District), Depachika, DisneySea, and Mount Fuji. The trip was amazing and I learned so much about my self as a senior and solo travelers. Here's a bit of advice: Be selective: Tokyo is so expansive, you could spend months there and not see everything. So, don't try to do too much. I know I probably should have cut back on my schedule or added some days. Transportation: Tokyo is very spread out, so it takes time to get from one place to another. Try to focus your travels in one area for each day, so you don't spend too much time in transport. If you plan to save money by using public transport, investigate what the best map app is for Tokyo. I struggled with Google Maps, which would go out periodically. Mobility: For anyone with limited mobility, make sure you do your research before you arrive at a destination. Some of the sites require extensive walking. Safety: Tokyo felt very safe to me--even walking around at night. Crowds: If you have an aversion to crowds, Tokyo will be a challenge for you. If you still want to come, consider the off-season when there are less tourists. @seniorsolotravel Senior Solo Travel Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/443309331791413 Ghibli Museum: https://www.ghibli-museum.jp/ Edo Toyko Museum: https://www.edo-tokyo-museum.or.jp/ DisneySea: https://www.tokyodisneyresort.jp/tds/ Sakurai Japanese Tea Service: https://sakurai-tea.jp/ Tokyo Tower: https://en.tokyotower.co.jp/ Meiji Shrine: https://www.meijijingu.or.jp/ Ueno Park: https://www.kensetsu.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/jimusho/toubuk/ueno/index_top.html Hotel Gajoen Tokyo: https://www.hotelgajoen-tokyo.com/ Tennoji Temple: http://www.tendaitokyo.jp/jiinmei/tennoji/ Shinkjuku National Garden: https://www.env.go.jp/garden/shinjukugyoen/index.html Japan Videos: 7 Things to Know Before Visiting Japan: https://youtu.be/R2TYnvjknwk Tokyo Japan: https://youtu.be/sXPHIG1FhN4 Ghibli Museum Day Trip: https://youtu.be/tzuhTJ3vzDQ Mt Fuji and Hakone: https://youtu.be/Gm5zz7bdCEM Tokyo DisneySea: https://youtu.be/E68-ZB6UEqs Kanazawa-Matsusaki Ryokan: https://youtu.be/z3LQosJgYqU Kyoto: https://youtu.be/uloRjMbzXsA Hiroshima: https://youtu.be/ewz0bJWLUh8 Osaka: https://youtu.be/Wf1lDJrH0BU Korea Videos: 8 Things to Know Before Visiting South Korea: https://youtu.be/H0RZ5DLum_Y Seoul Part 1: https://youtu.be/zJjTZm847bo Seoul Part 2: https://youtu.be/oKzBfPt86nA DMZ: https://youtu.be/GrVWGHWBcV0 Gyeongju: https://youtu.be/X80G4QtyWFM Busan: https://youtu.be/K5owxgHcpa8 Jeju Island: https://youtu.be/yAVYxZV_6Io
